This decorative plate by Catherine Gran revisits one of the most enduring symbols of French identity: the Gallic rooster. Set against a tricolour cockade rendered in vibrant red, white, and blue, the rooster emerges at the centre of a composition that oscillates between heraldic tradition and contemporary graphic expression.
Gran’s characteristic ink drawing technique brings remarkable precision to the image. The finely detailed rooster contrasts with the dynamic, almost explosive treatment of the surrounding folds of the cockade, creating a tension between order and movement. The work evokes both national emblems and popular imagery, transforming a familiar symbol into a striking decorative object.
Produced as a signed and numbered limited edition of 50, Cocarde Coq reflects Catherine Gran’s ongoing exploration of collective memory, cultural symbols, visual archetypes. Balancing humour, elegance, and graphic intensity, the piece occupies a space between decorative art and contemporary artistic commentary.
