Portrait gonflé
Oil on canvas
100 × 73 cm
In Portrait gonflé, Catherine Gran adopts the vertical format and close framing of ceremonial portraiture. The creature rises from an accumulation of inflated forms, its orange face marked by hypnotic spiral eyes and surrounded by exuberant, multicoloured appendages. Confetti drifts across the composition, creating an atmosphere of celebration while partially obscuring the sitter, as though the portrait had been captured at the height of a private festivity.
Gran’s attention to seams, folds and reflected light gives the monster the tactile consistency of a hand-stitched inflatable sculpture. Its body seems simultaneously substantial and weightless. The branching horns extend upward into the open space of the canvas, while the curling blue forms introduce a fluid rhythm around the face. The muted background intensifies the saturated orange, yellow and blue, allowing the creature’s extravagant anatomy to dominate the image.
The title playfully connects the monster’s physical construction with the conventions of self-presentation. The figure appears dressed for the occasion, conscious of its pose and status, yet its spiralling gaze retains an appealing awkwardness. Within Les Monstres tendres, the work presents identity as something assembled, performed and joyfully exaggerated. Gran gives her imaginary sitter the dignity of an individual portrait while preserving the humour, vulnerability and gentle strangeness that define the series.
