Philippe Halsman (1906–1979)
Dalí Atomicus, 1948, printed circa 1970
Featuring Salvador Dalí
Silver gelatin print mounted on board
27.9 × 34.4 cm

In this celebrated image, Halsman suspends Dalí, three cats, furniture and streams of water in a carefully orchestrated moment of apparent weightlessness. Created without photomontage, the photograph translates the painter’s surrealist imagination into physical action, combining technical precision, theatricality and visual wit.

Philippe Halsman was one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the twentieth century, renowned for his inventive approach to portraiture and his long collaboration with Salvador Dalí. Dali Atomicus, first created in 1948, is among Halsmans most iconic images, combining photography, performance, and surrealist imagination. The photograph exemplifies his technical mastery and playful creativity, qualities that helped establish his reputation as one of the eras leading photographers. Halsmans work was widely exhibited internationally, and he received numerous honors, including the American Society of Magazine Photographers Life Achievement Award in 1975.
