"What interests me is the human being. And within the human being, that which appears beyond language. My entire body of work revolves around this theme, and more particularly through portraiture."
“I am drawn to things that are quite frontal, both in my creation and in life. It is linked to my mindset, and I like to think that from my mind to my paintbrush, there is a certain immediacy. I say ‘a certain’ because, in truth, before tackling a canvas, I work extensively, notably through drawing. Drawing is an integral part of my life; I draw on any surface and with whatever I can get my hands on.
I would say, then, that my painting is a blend of instinct and labor. A considerable amount of work, because there is always an obligation within me to do well—in the sense of authenticity, and out of respect for the great masters.
I paint with everything that happens to me, my past, my present, and I draw inspiration as much from the people I see daily as from those I glimpse in passing, in the subway, the street, bars… All similar, yet unique at the same time. The human figure, which is almost omnipresent in my work, reflects a battered and anxious humanity, often dark. The densest darkness is never far from the brightest light.”
